Designed in Manchester. Made to Last.
Most chair cushions are designed once, made cheap, and shipped to compete on price. We do it the other way around.
Why we don't compete on price.
The £10 Amazon cushion isn't bad because it's cheap. It's bad because the foam dies in six months, the fabric pills, and you end up replacing it twice a year — paying for a cheap cushion, again and again.
We sat down with one question: what does this cushion need to do at hour 12 of a 14-hour day, after a year of use?
That question made every material decision — the foam density, the cover fabric, the support base. It also made the build process. We design in the UK. We manufacture to spec in Germany. We batch-test every run before it ships. None of that is the cheap path. It's the right path for a product you're meant to keep using.
The four stages every BackMod kit goes through.
Designed in Manchester · Manufactured to spec in Germany · Batch-tested before shipping
It starts with sketches in a Manchester studio.
Every BackMod cushion starts as hand-sketched ergonomic shapes on a studio table in Manchester. Those sketches go into CAD, get prototyped, get sat in for a week, get rebuilt, and only get signed off when the team can't find anything else to fix.
- Ergonomic design and CAD modelling, mapped to the three pressure points the research kept pointing at.
- Material and fabric selection — every spec chosen for what happens at hour 12, not hour one.
- Prototype testing across real desk and chair setups, not just on a workbench.
Materials chosen for hour 12.
Most chair cushions use the cheapest viable foam at the lowest viable density. Six months in, that foam compresses to nothing — and the "lumbar support" you bought becomes a flat pad sliding around your chair. Ours is built to a spec it will still hit a year from now.
Engineered for comfort, durability, and long-session support.
Manufactured to spec, not to a price target.
Once the design is locked, production moves to a German manufacturing partner who builds to our specification. Every step is documented. Every batch is traceable.
- Precision fabric cutting on calibrated tables — every panel sized within tolerance.
- High-density memory foam shaping to the ergonomic profile signed off in Manchester.
- Expert sewing and stitching, with seam strength tested before assembly.
- Careful final assembly with QC checkpoints at each stage of build.
Six checks. Every cushion. Every batch.
Every BackMod kit goes through a six-stage quality check before it leaves the line. Foam density gets verified against spec. Stitching gets inspected for strength and finish. Dimensions get measured against the design tolerance. Only the kits that pass every check get packaged and shipped.
